Blotter: Friends make up after bad loan, theft

12:25 AM CDT on Saturday, July 12, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A man called Denton County sheriff’s deputies about 1 a.m. Friday and confessed to stealing property from his neighbor and friend.

The man said the friend’s brother borrowed money from him and then left town. He wanted the money back, so he went to the friend’s house in the 1300 block of Kingston Place in the Aubrey area. No one was at home, he said, and he took a flat-screen TV and two kinds of PlayStations to account for the money.

When the friend came home he confronted the man, who denied taking the property, according to the sheriff’s report. The friend threatened to burn down the first man’s house, so he called 911. Deputies took the friend to jail.

The first man wanted to drop charges and “do the right thing,” he said. The friend would not press charges against him either, and he returned the property.

Other reports

700 block of Dallas Drive — A man stole 1,500 pounds of Linotype lead from a print shop, the owner reported Thursday.

The owner said she was in a back room working when a couple came into the shop about 11:30 a.m. They wanted to buy printing plates, and purchased $150 worth. The man said he would like to buy some of the Linotype metal that was stored in the front of the shop in boxes. He said he would return later to buy the material.

She did not see him return, but when she walked to the front of the shop about 2:30 p.m., all the boxes of lead were gone.

1100 block of East McKinney Street — A man reported Thursday that he left his 1996 Nissan unlocked and running in the parking lot of a convenience store while he went inside for a few minutes. When he came out of the store, the car was gone.

400 block of Kingfisher Street — A woman reported her boyfriend became upset when he found out she was seeing another man. He came to the house and yelled from the front yard for them to come outside to fight him.

They did not come out, so he smashed the back windshield of her car with a baseball bat, she told police.

700 block of Railroad Avenue — A man called about 11 p.m. Thursday to report that his neighbors had called to tell him that someone was inside a house he owns. The neighbors could see two men walking around inside the house turning lights on and off, according to the report.

Officers responded. Some of them searched the house, which had been ransacked but was not occupied. Others searched the surrounding streets. One officer talked to two men walking on a nearby street. She checked their identification and searched them and found a knife that had a medieval dragon decoration on it.

The men said they found the knife on the ground near the house that had been burglarized. The officer released the men but kept the knife.

The victim identified the knife as having been inside the house before the burglary.
