Blotter: Man thinks deputy was really repo man

12:06 AM CDT on Saturday, July 19, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A man posing as a Dallas County sheriff’s deputy actually was a repo man, according to a Denton County sheriff’s report Thursday.

The victim said he came home and found a card in his door in the 800 block of Post Oak Place near Aubrey. There was a phone number with a request to call, and the victim did.

The man at the other end of the line identified himself as a sheriff’s deputy and told him that if he did not turn over the vehicle in question, he would be charged with hindering apprehension and taken to jail.

The victim said he called the Dallas County agency and learned that no one with that name works there. The victim now believes the man is in the repossession business and was lying about being a law enforcement officer, which is illegal.

Other reports

1600 block of East McKinney Street — A police officer charged a man with criminal mischief Thursday after catching him as he ran away from a parking lot.

The officer reported he was blocking a lane of traffic for a water main break about 11:15 p.m. when he heard shouting and saw a man running toward him with people at his heels.

The people shouted at the officer to catch the man, and he did, after a brief struggle. The man smelled strongly of alcohol, according to the police report.

He was talking to the officer in a slurred voice, and the officer wrote that he realized the man was cursing him.

Witnesses said the man had pushed over a motorcycle in the parking lot and attempted to vandalize a golf cart.

The motorcycle owner estimated $1,000 in damage.
