Blotter: Several suspects sought in ATM break-in attempt
07:45 AM CDT on Monday, July 21, 2008
Police are looking for three or four men involved in the attempted theft of an ATM in the 1600 block of West University Drive around 4 a.m. Sunday.
Up to five suspects broke the window of a convenience store to reach the ATM, said Denton police spokesman Jim Bryan.
A bystander reported hearing a possible gunshot and saw two people leave the store in a Mitsubishi.
The witness stayed on the phone with police while following the Mitsubishi to a location near Londonderry Lane, Bryan said.
The suspects’ vehicle hit a truck in a parking lot in the 1700 block of Teasley Lane as they attempted to bail out, he said. One suspect was caught and taken to jail.
Police believe two or three people also involved in the attempted ATM theft left the convenience store in a blue minivan.
While officers had set up a perimeter in area where the Mitsubishi crashed, police received a 911 call about a burglary in process a little after 4 a.m., Bryan said.
A woman came home to find a stranger in her apartment, he said. They exchanged words, and the stranger left with an iPod and 61 DVDs.
She told police the man got into a red Volvo.
A red Volvo happened to drive past an officer looking for the suspect in the attempted ATM theft, Bryan said, and a suspect in the home burglary was arrested. The burglary victim said all of her items were recovered.
