Blotter: Motorcyclist eludes police on potentially stolen bike
12:19 AM CDT on Saturday, July 31, 2010
A registration check led to the arrest of a motorcycle theft suspect by Denton police Thursday.
Police were attempting to stop a motorcycle heading westbound on University Drive but the driver kept going, turning north on Carroll Boulevard and speeding up, according to a police report.
Officers tried to catch up to the motorcycle and alerted dispatchers of the driver’s attempt to evade them.
The officers noted the female passenger on the back of the bike “holding on for dear life,” according to the report.
Since Carroll Boulevard is a dangerous road for a pursuit because it is curvy and unlevel, officers slowed their vehicle down but kept following the motorcycle, according to the report. The driver turned on multiple streets before officers finally lost sight of the motorcycle.
Several motorcycles have been stolen over the past several weeks, according to the report, with police keeping close watch on a possible suspect.
Police ventured to the suspect’s house and found his mother, who said the man was not home, the report said.
Meanwhile, another unit had located the suspects and was following them on East University Drive.
The motorcyclist then fled on Fishtrap Road toward Mingo Road as officers pursued. The motorcycle fell over after the driver attempted to take it off-road and the man and woman fled on foot, the report said.
Several other arriving officers set a perimeter around the area and brought in a K9 unit. The dogs located a torn white shirt worn by the male suspect. Later, the woman was located and taken into custody. The man, who had been identified as the police’s theft suspect, was not found, but officers planned to track him down later in the day, according to the report.
Other reports
3200 block of Broken Bow Street — A man and woman called Denton police to report that their son had assaulted them. The father told officers the son was upset over what he was told he had to do at work and proceeded to slap his father and knock him to the floor, according the report.
Police investigated the house and found a broken chair in the kitchen and a phone cord ripped from the wall. There were red marks on the side of the man’s neck and near his temple, according to the report.
The report said the woman was injured when she tried to break up the scuffle and the son pushed her back into a cabinet in the kitchen.
The woman filled out a statement form, but the father said he had to leave. Officers told the couple to call them if there were any other problems and to alert Decatur police of the incident, since the father and son were both heading to that city for work, the report said.
2200 block of Double Oak Court — A man and woman reported that someone tried to steal the radio from their vehicle.
The dashboard around the radio and the air conditioner panels was pulled off and the faceplate of the radio had been taken, but the radio had been left behind, according to the report.
The car was parked on the roadway in front of their house and the man said he could not remember whether he had locked the car door, according to the report.
600 block of East Hickory Street — A woman reported that a friend who helped her move out of her apartment failed to return her vehicle after using it to go to Lewisville to take a shower.
She said she allowed the man to borrow the vehicle, but requested he return it soon. After a while, the woman called the man, who said he was in Farmers Branch and would be back in 20 minutes, according to the report.
Still later, the man had not returned the car and was not answering the woman’s calls, according to the report. She told police she just wants him to return the car.
