Blotter: Police investigate local complaint of elder abuse

06:57 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 5, 2009

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer

State officials with Adult Protective Services filed a complaint of elder abuse with Denton police in April, alleging that an elderly Denton woman was being victimized by people close to her, according to a police report released Tuesday.

Detectives continue to look into how the title to the woman’s car was changed from her name to the name of a family friend. They also are investigating how the woman’s will was recently changed, leaving her home and the rest of her estate primarily to a friend.

Other reports

5100 block of East McKinney Street — Ryan High School’s principal told police Monday that an all-terrain vehicle used by the school’s athletics department was stolen from a storage shed.

He told police he wasn’t sure when the vehicle was taken, but he had written down the license plate number of a suspicious vehicle on campus earlier.

He said he didn’t call police then because he couldn’t remember the nonemergency number and didn’t want to call 911 because it didn’t appear to be an emergency at the time, according to the report.

Police traced the license number to a car registered at a nearby address and when visiting the address, saw a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen ATV.

A person at the address said the vehicle was from Camp Copass and became defensive after learning how police traced the address, according to the report.

2200 block of FM1192, Pilot Point — A Tioga woman admitted Monday to taking money from a 77-year-old Levelland woman’s purse while the elderly woman attended a wedding at a hotel, according to a sheriff’s department report. But the suspect, who worked at the hotel, claimed she only took $300, not $600, as the victim alleged.

In addition, the suspect said she still had $75 and turned it over to investigators.

The hotel owner told sheriff’s deputies that another patron had complained earlier that someone took $50 from a room, and hotel staff suspected one of the cleaning staff. But the patron did not report the theft to police.

In both occasions, hotel patrons claimed their rooms were locked when they left, according to the report.

This time, employees noticed that the suspect took the master key for the building where the victim was staying, according to the report. She had been assigned to clean a different building.

7400 Grubbs, Aubrey — An Aubrey man told sheriff’s deputies that his Arabian horse was killed last week, the day after a dispute with two of the several laborers who live and work on his horse farm.

After a previous dispute, a colt’s eye was gouged the next day, the horse rancher said. This time, the veterinarian stated the horse died after being hit in the head with a blunt object, the man said. Deputies are investigating possible charges of cruelty to livestock.
