Blotter: Bicyclist reports being struck by angry motorist

08:13 AM CDT on Monday, August 30, 2010

A bicyclist told police a motorist struck him with his vehicle Saturday afternoon, knocking him off his bicycle, and dragging the bike for a short time as the motorist sped off.

The alleged hit-and-run incident, which occurred in the 600 block of Alice Street, started when the motorist yelled at the bicyclist, according to a police report. When the bicyclist made an obscene hand gesture in response, the motorist put his vehicle in reverse, backed down the street and hit the bicyclist, according to the report.

The bicyclist told police he couldn’t pedal fast enough to avoid getting struck by the vehicle, the report stated.

After the motorist struck the victim, the bicyclist tried to open the car door and stop the suspect, but he couldn’t get the door open, according to the report. The driver then sped off toward Egan Street, the report stated.

The bicyclist had a minor scrape on his leg and his bicycle’s back wheel was warped, according to the report.

Police are investigating the incident as a suspected aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Other reports

700 block of South Interstate 35E — A woman told police her ex-boyfriend, who is also the father of her child, made threats to kill her, her family and her dog, during a child custody exchange Thursday, according to a police report.

The ex-boyfriend allegedly said he’d pay a “crackhead” to kill the woman, the report stated.

The woman said her ex-boyfriend was angry because she was preparing paperwork to force him to pay child support, according to the report.

2500 block of West Oak Street — After a police officer made contact with a known methamphetamine user Friday morning, the suspect became extremely nervous and began clutching her purse, making the officer believe she was carrying drugs, according to a police report.

When the officer asked the woman if she was carrying drugs, she hesitated before pulling out two baggies with an opaque substance he suspected was methamphetamine, the report stated. The woman said she was working with a police investigator and the drugs were being used in the investigation.

When the officer called the investigator, he denied authorizing the woman to buy drugs, the report stated.

The woman was arrested on a drug possession charge and taken to the city jail.

John Drive — A man who said he was awakened by barking dogs early Saturday morning got up to find the rear hatch of his sport utility vehicle open and saw a truck speeding away, the report stated.

Two shotguns and the man’s wallet were missing from the vehicle, according to the report.

The man told police he was unsure if he locked the vehicle’s doors. Officers were unable to find any evidence of forced entry into the vehicle.
