Blotter: Off-duty officer’s vigilance leads to several arrests

01:22 AM CDT on Monday, September 6, 2010

Several people were arrested after an off-duty police officer reported finding them partying inside a vacant house in southwest Denton early Saturday.

The officer told police he was driving home when he saw about 10 men standing by numerous vehicles in the neighborhood, according to a police report.

The officer had driven the neighborhood on numerous occasions and reported that the men looked unfamiliar.

When they saw the off-duty officer, who was still in uniform, they ran toward two of the five vehicles and took off, according to the report.

The officer then heard loud noises coming from a house he knew was recently vacated, and he saw that several screens had been removed from the house’s windows.

He also saw several people inside the house who ran into a back bedroom, according to the report.

By the time backup units arrived at the house, those inside had hidden throughout the building, the report stated. Police officers moved through the residence room-by-room, arresting 11 people, most of them underage teenagers, and confiscating liquor and beer, according to the report.

One teenage girl was found on the floor of a bedroom, passed out and covered in vomit, the report stated. Medics were brought out to treat the girl.

Most of the 11 were arrested and taken to the city jail on trespassing charges. Four others, all underage, were taken to juvenile detention.
