Blotter: Police search home, arrest man on drug charges

12:17 AM CDT on Saturday, September 19, 2009

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Denton police arrested a man Wednesday on drug charges, despite his declarations that he was not growing marijuana in his home.

A witness who had been in the home reported seeing large plants in a bedroom containing hydroponic growing equipment.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the house in the 100 block of Massey Street and waited for the resident to arrive. When he drove up, they served the search warrant, and he told them to search all they wanted but there was no marijuana in his rented house.

The officers found a room outfitted with hydroponic growing paraphernalia. They found 30 pots with stumps where the illegal plant had recently been harvested. In a plastic bag they found branches of the plant with leaves still attached.

The officers also found 28 grams of illegal mushrooms in the house and added that charge as well.

Other reports

1700 block of Teasley Lane — Acting on information about the whereabouts of a stolen motorcycle, detectives knocked on a door Thursday and were invited inside an apartment. One of the detectives recognized a man sitting on a couch and knew he had an outstanding warrant, according to the report. The female resident gave permission for a search, but retracted the permission when they began going through her belongings.

They obtained a search warrant and found needles, syringes, scales, meth pipes and baggies all over the apartment. Most of the paraphernalia had methamphetamine residue on them. They found a bag of methamphetamine in the man’s clothing and took him to jail.

600 block of East Hickory Street — A woman reported Thursday that someone has twice taken over her Facebook account and sent messages in her name.

She said that in July her Facebook friends received messages purportedly from her saying she was stranded in London and needed money to get home. The friends knew she was not in London and no one sent money, she said. She changed her password on the account.

On Thursday she again began receiving calls from friends that they were getting the messages again. One friend said he engaged in a communication with the person pretending to be her and acted as though he believed the message and would send money.

The pretender asked for $700 and told him to send it from the nearest Western Union business.

He tried to elicit information from the sender but was not able to learn anything about the person sending the messages.
