Blotter: Police: Unsupervised toddler found wandering south Denton
08:51 AM CDT on Thursday, October 8, 2009
A 2-year-old boy and a dog were found roaming a Denton street Tuesday morning with no adults in sight, leading the police to report the matter to Child Protective Services.
A passerby stopped for the child in the intersection of Montecito Drive and El Paseo Street about 9:45 a.m. The child knew his first name but not his last and did not know where he lived. He wore a shirt and shorts but no shoes, and his feet were very dirty, according to the police report. Officers knocked on doors and found a woman at home who recognized the dog as belonging to a household in the neighborhood.
But no one answered at that house, even after the officer banged on the door. A car pulled into the driveway, and a woman said she was a co-worker of the woman who lived in the house. The child is the woman’s grandson, she said. She called the grandmother, who said her son was supposed to be caring for the toddler.
The woman said the child’s parents are on a cruise and her son was in charge of the boy. She told the officer which window belonged to her son’s bedroom, and he banged on the window until a man came to the door.
The man said he put out some toys for the child to play with while he took a shower. The child was gone when he got out of the shower, he said, so he assumed his father took the child to work with him.
The officer noted the man looked as though he had been asleep and did not look showered. He believed the unattended child and dog left the house at least 40 minutes before the man was awakened.
The man asked him not to report the incident, saying it would be embarrassing. The officer explained that his job was to protect the child from harm, not the man from embarrassment. He filed a case with CPS.
Other reports
3300 block of Fallmeadow Street — Police followed a dog to find a woman who had attempted suicide Tuesday morning.
A woman called 911, saying she had heard from one of her daughters that she was going to commit suicide. Officers responded to the house about 5:10 a.m. and found no one inside. They found a broken liquor bottle and bottles of pills scattered around. The mother, who had been reached by telephone, said the daughter’s dog should be inside the house. The dog was outside, and it led them to a field across the street, across the field and to a far corner where the woman was lying on the ground.
The victim was transported by ambulance to a hospital emergency room for treatment. According to the police report, the victim is bipolar and had not been taking her medication.
3900 block of McKinney Street — Someone broke into a car left at a business for work Tuesday, according to a police report. An employee said a man came in for work and walked over to the car. He opened the trunk and was examining a stereo speaker, according to the report. He was told to get away from the car. The employees believe he came back at some point and took the speaker.
