Blotter: Tot found wandering near home

Man caring for boy left without telling mother next door

08:34 AM CDT on Thursday, October 15, 2009

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Police looked for the mother of a toddler found wandering around in his pajamas Tuesday morning and finally located her in an apartment next door to her own.

A man called for help at about 8:20 a.m. He said he was walking to the University of North Texas and the child came up to him. He asked the little boy where he lived, and the boy pointed to an apartment complex nearby.

The man walked the child to the complex and spotted one apartment with an open door. He assumed the child had gotten out while his parents were asleep, he said, but no one seemed to be at home.

The responding officer called out and checked the apartment, but it was empty.

The boy began crying and asking for his mother. The officer asked him which car belonged to his family, and he pointed to one parked in front of the apartment. The officer learned the name of the car’s owner, and it matched a driver’s license he saw in the apartment.

The officer found a number for a child care center. He obtained an emergency telephone number from the center, but no one answered the telephone.

The officer decided to look in the car for something that might give him a clue where the mother could be. When he opened the door, the car alarm sounded.

A woman stuck her head through the doorway of the adjoining apartment and asked what was going on.

She said she was the owner of the car and the mother of the child. She said she left the boy in the care of her boyfriend, who was visiting from Waco, while she paid a visit next door.

She had no idea the man left the child alone, according to the report. When she tried to call the boyfriend, he did not answer his phone.

Police determined that she had not neglected the child and left him in her care.

Other reports

Car burglars struck 10 vehicles Monday night in Denton, most of them at three apartment complexes.

A Colorado Boulevard complex was hardest hit, with five vehicle owners reporting that someone smashed windows to gain entry and steal stereo systems and GPS units.

Vehicle burglars also smashed windows and took stereo systems at a complex in the 2600 block of Woodhaven Street, the 2400 block of South Interstate 35E and the 1000 block of Dallas Drive.

Police are investigating to determine whether the same criminals could be responsible for all the break-ins.
