Blotter: Man disarmed at mental health facility

08:13 AM CST on Wednesday, November 11, 2009

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Police disarmed a man who brought a gun into a mental health facility Sunday and threatened to shoot his way out, according to a police report.

A hospital employee called police about 10:45 a.m., saying the man’s wife brought him in a few minutes earlier asking for help. The man had become aggressive, making threats and attacking the family dog, she said.

The employee said she left the room for a moment. When she returned, the husband was in the bathroom and the wife was shaking and crying. She said the man had a license to carry a concealed weapon and that he had it in his possession. He told her he was going to shoot his way out of the facility, she said.

The employee called 911 and officers arrived. They evacuated nearby rooms and confronted the man, who refused to hand over the weapon.

One officer pointed a Taser at him and asked that he surrender the weapon. He put his hands on his head as directed, according to the report, and the officers removed a .40-caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol from a holster under his outer clothing.

He was charged as a concealed carry license holder with carrying a weapon into a prohibited place.

Other reports

6000 block of North Interstate 35 — A truck driver said Monday that he left his Freightliner truck and trailer in a parking lot Friday and spent the weekend home with his family. When he returned, it was not in the parking lot.

Wilson Cemetery Road, Aubrey area — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the dumping of 25 large 18-wheeler tires near the cemetery, according to a sheriff’s report. The dumping was reported Sunday. Later, a witness reported that a yard in the area had been cluttered with discarded tires and now they were gone.

Deputies contacted the man who lives there. He said he is getting a divorce. He loaded all the tires into a truck, he said. Then his estranged wife took the truck. He said she hired some men to get rid of the tires for her. He did not know whether they dumped the tires at the cemetery, according to the sheriff’s report.
