Blotter: Report: Woman turns over fake money orders to police
11:58 PM CST on Friday, November 21, 2008
On Thursday, a Denton woman turned over to police four fake money orders sent to her in a mystery shopper scam, according to a police report
The woman, who works for a check-cashing store, determined for herself that the four money orders, made out to a discount story for $930.45, were counterfeit because they lacked key security features.
She told police that a scam company sent her the money orders, offering her the mystery shopping work after she posted her resume online. The issuers sent the money orders, asking her to shop at the discount store and telling her she could keep the merchandise. She was then supposed to wire about $2,700 to Canada.
Denton police are turning the investigation over to the U.S. Secret Service.
