Blotter: 4 people show up intoxicated for jail tour
06:11 PM CST on Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Three men and a woman arrived at the Denton County Jail at 10:30 a.m. Friday for court-ordered jail tours in connection with their probation on driving while intoxicated charges.
Jailers thought all four of the people appeared to be intoxicated, according to sheriff’s reports. They called for deputies, who asked the people to take breathalyzer tests.
Test results for blood alcohol content in the four ranged from 0.012 percent to 0.123 percent.
Since the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent, the deputies told the people to call someone to drive them home but did not arrest them.
All four said they had been drinking the night before and that is why they still had alcohol in their blood.
They were not allowed to tour the jail, and the judge who ordered the tours will be notified, according to the sheriff’s report.
Other reports
2800 block of North Locust Street — A night of free birthday boozing turned ugly for a man, who faces charges including aggravated assault and DWI after he leaves a hospital.
In a report filed Nov. 17 and released Monday, police noted they responded to a report of a domestic disturbance about 11:40 p.m. The caller said he lives below a couple who seemed to be fighting and the woman was calling for help.
When officers arrived, another witness said she heard a gunshot from the apartment.
Officers found the door open but no one inside. There was broken glass on the floor, and a laptop computer was lying upside down in a mound of dog feces, according to the report. An officer found a shotgun shell on the floor and the shotgun lying across a bed.
He found material in the apartment that showed the residents’ names. About that time, a woman came to the apartment with a pit bull and said she lived there. She had a bleeding laceration on one hand, according to the report.
She said she and her common-law husband started the evening driving to several bars in town. It was his birthday, she said, but they had no money. So she drove him to all the bars that are known to serve a free shot of alcohol to people who are celebrating a birthday. Her husband had about 10 shots, she said, and passed out in the car on the way home.
She had to help him up the stairs. Once inside, he realized that the pit bull had managed to get out of its cage and had damaged the blinds in the apartment. He became enraged, she told police, and tried to harm the dog. She tried to protect the dog, who was so frightened that it defecated on the floor, which further enraged the man.
He choked the woman as she stood between him and dog, and knocked a picture off the wall as he threw her to the floor, the report states. The broken glass from the picture cut her hand.
She was able to get free and grabbed the dog and her purse and left the apartment. She drove around for a while, she said, and then returned.
She said the man did not fire the shotgun before she left.
The officers learned the man had been involved in a traffic accident a short distance from the apartment. He was seriously injured, along with the female driver of the other car and her baby.
