Election office to move for repairs

Damage at Carroll building forces county to relocate department

01:04 AM CDT on Sunday, July 6, 2008

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer

The county elections office will open Monday at 300 E. McKinney St., the former tax office, and remain there until crews can reopen the Joseph A. Carroll Building.

The decision to make the temporary move followed news that repairs to the building’s electrical system, which suffered a catastrophic failure Saturday night, won’t be completed for a few more days.

Danny Brumley, county facilities director, advised county employees via e-mail Thursday that crews are still waiting for parts, and once all the parts are received, it will still take a few days to make repairs.

“The manufacturer is having to make the parts and ship them to us,” Brumley said, adding that the county expects delivery of the last parts they need by Sunday.

Because Don Alexander, election administrator for Denton County, and several elections administration employees were on vacation last week, the department remained closed while other county departments moved to other temporary locations and resumed business.

By opening in the old tax office temporarily on Monday morning, the department will be able to help register those who wish to vote.

“Voter registration applications can be processed through the state as we’ve always done,” Alexander said.

However, through Monday morning, and possibly later, the office will have limited ability to print reports, Alexander said.

He was working with information services employees to link computers so that reports can be printed, and also with a facilities crew so that the old tax building, including the public restrooms, would be serviceable.

Elections offices are housed on the first floor of the Carroll building but were forced to move because air conditioning is unavailable outside the computer room, Alexander said.

“The computer room has standalone power,” Alexander said. “I can run in that room and [hold] elections when the rest of the building is dead.”
