Les Cockrell: Neighbors help local boys aid sick children
07:25 AM CDT on Thursday, August 12, 2010
Two Denton youngsters are crediting the generosity of their neighbors for helping them raise $365.87 to benefit Kidd’s Kids, an organization founded by Dallas radio personality Kidd Kraddick to make a difference in the lives of terminally and chronically ill children.
Last Friday, William Walker, 8, and his brother, Austin Walker, 11, set up a lemonade stand and accepted donations.
They were delighted with the results and reported that donations continued even after the stand had been closed for the day.
“I think the boys were shocked that people still wanted to donate, even though the stand had been shut down,” said Holly Walker, the boys’ mom. “We started giving a bottle of water with a single packet of lemonade in thanks for the donations. Our community is awesome.”
The boys took a cashier’s check and additional donated checks made payable to Kidd’s Kids to the Dallas radio station, where they received an enthusiastic reception from Kidd Kraddick and his crew, Holly Walker said.
“He came out with the whole crew and praised them up and down,” she said. “It was really, really neat.”
Both boys said they thought the effort was worth it.
“Yeah, it was worth it,” said Austin. “It went good. I was happy and glad that we did it.”
William agreed.
“Yeah, I think it was worth it, helping children,” he said. “I think we will do it again next summer.”

Longtime Bartonville resident Jim Morriss, a retired engineer who served as a Boy Scout leader for 22 years, will be the featured speaker.
An amateur writer who specializes in local history and in the early pioneers of Denton County, Morris will discuss how Scouting got its start in this area and the city leaders who made it happen.
All exhibits and lectures at the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum are free and open to the public.
The courthouse has handicapped parking and accessibility through the north entrance. There is an elevator available for public use. The museum is in the historic Courthouse on the Square, 110 W. Hickory St.

Saturday will be market day once again in downtown Pilot Point, and shoppers should find a good selection of late summer produce, said Wayne Gooden, one of the market founders.
Hours for the market will be 8 a.m. to noon or vendor sellout.
“I’m sure we’ll have a lot of watermelons, cantaloupes and other late produce,” Gooden said.
The market has averaged between 12 and 15 vendors each month, and Gooden said he expects about the same number to participate Saturday, offering not only produce but also handmade items.
For more information about the market, visit www.pilot pointfarmersmarket.org.
Also on tap this Saturday will be another installment of Movie Night on the Square, and the featured film will be E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, said Karen Walterscheid, executive director of the Pilot Point Chamber of Commerce.
“The movie will begin at dusk,” she said.
This month’s selection should make good viewing for all ages and could introduce a classic film to some youngsters, Walterscheid said.
“A lot of the kids these days may not have seen E.T.,” she said.
The movie is free, and viewers are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to the square. Refreshments will be offered for sale.
Saturday’s movie will be the last of the season, Walterscheid said.
