Woman shot at park in Corinth
Man turned gun on mother holding baby; police talk to ‘person of interest’06:58 AM CDT on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Corinth police questioned a “person of interest” late Monday after a 36-year-old woman was shot while holding her baby at a city park.
Police said the woman and her two children were at Fairview Park, in the 3600 block of Fairview Drive, when a man shot her shortly before noon Monday.
Corinth officers responded to the call at 11:43 a.m., police Capt. Greg Wilkerson said. The victim, whose name is being withheld, was transported by CareFlite helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, he said. Her condition was not available.
Wilkerson said officers spoke to the victim, who lives adjacent to the park, before she was taken to the hospital.
She described the shooter as an older white man with gray hair who was driving a small gray or light green four-door vehicle. The woman told police she had noticed the man sitting on the park bench before the incident. He approached her while she was holding her infant child and shot her, Wilkerson said.
“We know he approached her, but we don’t know how close the proximity was,” Wilkerson said.
Lt. Lance Stacy said the shooter fled and the victim ran to a nearby house for help before returning to the site of the shooting.
Stacy said the man being interviewed had walked into the Corinth Police Department late Monday afternoon.
The man fits the victim’s description, Stacy said.
“We’re just kind of in a holding pattern to determine if he’s the shooter or not,” Stacy said on Monday afternoon.
Police have obtained warrants to search several vehicles and locations possibly connected to the crime, he said. Officers also will talk to the victim again once she’s been treated.
Police said the woman’s two children were not injured. The infant was transported to Denton Regional Medical Center for observation. The victim’s young son was questioned and released to family members, Stacy said.
The woman told police she did not know the shooter, and police said they have not determined a motive for the shooting.
Stacy said they don’t believe robbery was a motive.
Officers canvassed the area for more than four hours Monday looking for evidence. The area surrounding the park was shut down until officers completed their investigation, and neighbors in the area were interviewed to see if they witnessed or heard anything.
