County flu shot clinic draws hundreds

08:36 AM CDT on Thursday, October 1, 2009

By Bj Lewis / Staff Report

Due diligence to their doctor’s orders led Sidney and Nelda Rogers to join hundreds of people at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex getting flu shots from the Denton County Health Department.

Wednesday’s flu shot clinic was the last of four conducted by county health officials throughout September. The county will make its remaining vaccines available at its Lewisville and Denton offices.

“As we’ve gotten older, we’ve learned to play by the doctor’s orders,” Sidney Rogers said.

The couple said they had gone a number of years without getting vaccinated, but now that they are in their 80s, they plan to play it safe.

After getting their shots, the two studied a sign in the clinic area that listed target populations for seasonal flu and swine flu vaccines. Signs posted around the four vaccination stations made it clear that the vaccine people were receiving was for the seasonal flu, not the swine flu.

The Rogerses said they were unsure whether they would return for the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available.

Sharing that uncertainty were Karissa and Ben Tulliers of Sanger. They and their two children received vaccinations.

“We get one every year, and we haven’t been sick so far,” Karissa Tulliers said.

The swine flu virus is a different story.

“I really don’t know much about it,” she said. “I will think about it.”

Dr. Bing Burton, the county health director, said the county has enough remaining seasonal flu vaccine to last about two weeks.

Burton said he does not know when the county will receive the swine flu vaccine but uncertainty is to be expected.

“It’s just one of the realities of dealing with a new virus,” Burton said. “We’re happy that there’s been a vaccine developed and we will be able to protect much of the community in the near future.”
