Denton County is Obama country, at least among Democrats.

Unofficial results Tuesday showed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama won the Denton County Democratic Convention by a 94-48 delegate tally over New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to the Web site Burnt Orange Report.

The results come a month after Obama won the popular vote in the county presidential primary by an 11 percentage point margin.

The blog’s report, which was referenced on the Texas Democratic Party’s Web site, also reported that Obama was in the lead with 3,987 delegates to Clinton’s 3,183 in state results with 71 percent of counties reporting. The results were last updated Monday.

A total of about 7,300 delegates were expected to be selected in this stage of the caucus process, according to the Texas Democratic Party.

The Associated Press reported Obama had 2,723 delegates compared to to 1,997 for Clinton with 58 conventions reporting.

Neil Durrance, Denton County Democratic Party chairman, could not be reached for comment to verify the results, and party officials at the Denton headquarters referred questions to Durrance. Monday, Durrance said the results were still being counted at headquarters.

Nearly 3,000 residents attended the event Saturday at Quakertown Park, which began Saturday morning and crept into the late evening. It was believed to be the largest party convention in Denton County’s history.

More than 54,000 residents voted in the Democratic primary, the largest in recent history. The voter boom was largely attributed to the heated presidential contest between Clinton and Obama.
