20-year-old man drowns at Ray Roberts Lake
11:35 PM CDT on Friday, July 3, 2009
A 20-year-old Dallas man drowned Friday afternoon while swimming in a remote part of Ray Roberts Lake near Pilot Point in Cooke County, said Jim Lundberg, a game warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The man was swimming with several friends about 25 yards from the shore, in an area littered with tree debris. The man, who was not identified late Friday, went under the water about 4 p.m. and didn’t surface, Lundberg said.
A recovery team was unable to reach the location until about 7 p.m. because of a language barrier and the remoteness of the location, he said.
The man’s body was recovered about 20 minutes after officials started the search.
“He’d been down awhile before we got there,” Lundberg said.
“This was not an area where people swim.”
Lundberg said the man was an inexperienced swimmer, and alcohol and drugs were not involved in the accident.
