Miguelito owner killed in single-car accident 1:20 PM CT

11:21 AM CDT on Friday, June 12, 2009

By Candace Carlisle / Staff Writer

The owner of three Denton-area restaurants was killed early Friday morning in a single-car accident in Sanger.

Diana Cruz, 55, of Sanger was traveling northbound in the 3500 block of FM 2450, when she failed to navigate a curve and ran off the road, said Keith Atkins, a communications officer with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Her car entered a ditch off the side of the road and flipped five times. Cruz, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from her vehicle, Atkins said.

The medical examiner pronounced Cruz dead at the scene, he said.

Cruz was on her way home from work at the Sanger location of her restaurant chain, Miguelito’s Mexican Restaurant, at that time, said Roy Toomer, manager of the restaurants.

Toomer learned of the accident about 1:45 a.m., he said.

Miguelito’s Mexican Restaurants in Denton, Krum and Sanger will close until Tuesday, Toomer said.

The medical examiner’s office has ruled Cruz died of blunt force trauma to the chest during the accident.

The Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
