A University of North Texas international student died in a motorcycle accident Saturday night and a second international student was injured.

Ali Abdulkareem Al-Qallaf, 24, of Saudi Arabia, died at the scene of the accident on Carroll Boulevard near Panhandle Street about 11:20 p.m.

His passenger, Ai Kobayashi, 19, of Japan, was taken to an area hospital. Her condition was considered to be serious at the scene but could not be determined Monday.

Denton police said she was taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. A spokeswoman from the hospital said there was no record of her admittance.

Police spokesman Jim Bryan said Al-Qallaf was southbound on Carroll. Witnesses said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into the back of a 2007 Toyota Camry traveling slower in the same direction, Bryan said.

Witnesses gave different estimated speeds the motorcycle was traveling. All were over the posted speed limit of 35 mph, Bryan said. Some witnesses estimated the speed of the motorcycle at up to 100 mph.

“Neither one of the riders was wearing a helmet,” Bryan said.

Al-Qallaf was thrown onto the trunk of the Camry and partially through the back windshield. No one in the Camry was injured, Bryan said.

Kobayashi was thrown from the motorcycle and landed nearby on the pavement.

UNT spokesman Roddy Wolper said Al-Qallaf had recently finished the Intensive English Language Institute and was admitted for the fall semester in electrical engineering as a freshman.

Kobayashi is a drama theater major and is either a freshman or sophomore, Wolper said. University officials were not able to determine which, he said.

A memorial service for Al-Qallaf will take place Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in Room 102 of Kendall Hall on Highland Street, Wolper said. UNT’s International Studies and Programs office is in Kendall Hall.
