Female victim in fatal house fire identified

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the second victim in a fatal fire last Thursday as Marlene Fielding, 53, who lived in the fire-ravaged house on Country View Road.

On Monday, the medical examiner identified the first victim as her husband, Larry Fielding, 64.

The two were found in the master bedroom of the house when firefighters were able to enter about 11 a.m. Thursday. According to reports, she was lying on the bed and he was crouched on the floor beside her. A trail of a flammable liquid believed to be gasoline started in a spare bedroom and led through the living room, hall, the master bedroom, bath and closet.

The victims suffered severe burns.

No cause of death has been released for either victim pending toxicology tests that often take a month. Officials say they still are investigating but are leaning toward murder-suicide.

Larry Fielding had lost his job at a Frisco auto dealership about a month ago, friends said, and the couple may have been having financial problems as a result. According to a Denton County sheriff’s report, a tow-truck company tried to repossess the couple’s boat after midnight Tuesday, but employees were prevented by alert neighbors who called 911 when they saw the driver take down crime scene tape to access the boat.

Sheriff’s deputies and officers from Krum and Sanger sent the tow truck on its way.

The boat still is part of a crime scene, officials said.

The four family dogs — three shelties and an Australian shepherd — had been placed in the family sport utility vehicle with food and water before the fire started, and both of the couple’s vehicles had been backed away from the house. Sheriff’s Deputy Kirk Sissney took the dogs and turned them over to a sheltie rescue group.

Becky Ramsey, a representative of Dallas-Fort Worth Sheltie Rescue, said the dogs are in foster care.

“We are keeping them together in a private home and they are doing well,” she said. “It is the most edifying thing to us that in the midst of that chaos and tragedy, a Denton County sheriff [deputy] was so considerate of the dogs, lifted them gently from the car, and made sure they went right away into caring arms.”
