Deadline for voters is Monday

08:51 AM CDT on Sunday, October 4, 2009

By Bj Lewis / Staff Writer

Denton County residents have until Monday to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election.

Registrations can be taken to the elections office at the Joseph A. Carroll Building, 401 W. Hickory St., until 5 p.m. Mailed registrations must be postmarked by Monday.

Don Alexander, county elections administrator, said he has not seen much of a last-minute rush to register.

“This is kind of a ho-hum election,” Alexander said. “There’s really not any what I would call hot-button items on this ballot.”

He said there are some local issues that have to do with property tax, eminent domain and veterans that may attract voters. Those include the city of Denton’s charter issue and Lake Dallas’ City Council vacancy.

Alexander said he would be impressed if 30,000 voters turn out for the election.

“I would love for them to surprise me and go 50,000 to 60,000,” he said.

Alexander noted that in 2005 only 22,000 turned out to vote.

Phyllis Wolper, Denton County Democratic Party chairwoman, said voter education is just as much a focus as voter registration.

“It’s important for each voter to understand the issues and difference in party lines, and what each candidate stands for,” she said.

Wolper said party officials stress the importance of local government elections.

“A lot of people only think it’s important to vote for national leaders, because they don’t have an understanding of how local government works,” she said. “With more education, we think there would be more voters participating in our off-year elections.”

Diane Edmondson, Denton County Republican Party chairwoman, agreed.

“Some people can just blow off the constitutional amendments, but these are things that are really important to the citizens,” Edmondson said. “Sometimes it’s just housekeeping to clean up language, but these as a whole are going to change things for the citizens of Texas.”

Early voting runs Oct. 19-30. The county will have 15 early voting sites open, and the locations will be listed on the county Web site, www.elections.dentoncounty.com.

On Election Day, there will be 30 polling places, and those sites also will be listed on the county Web site.
