Krum mayor retains seat

Wilson defeats 2 challengers with committee’s help

KRUM — Terri Wilson sailed past a pair of opponents to secure her second term as mayor, grabbing a majority — 305 of the 468 votes cast — even though she needed only a plurality to win.

Political newcomer Don Ouellette, 59, a mechanic with the county road and bridge department, picked up 53 votes. Former Mayor Larry Lamonica, 60, who runs a mowing service, garnered 110.

Wilson, 44, a third-grade teacher at Hattie Dyer Elementary School, was the only candidate in Krum, or any area city, to enjoy the support of a special-purpose committee in this spring’s general election.

“They did make a big difference,” Wilson said. “They got out and walked and passed out flyers.”

Residents often form special-purpose committees to promote local option or bond elections. But in the past few years, residents have also been forming special-purpose committees to support candidates. Last year, in Argyle and Oak Point, the committees spent thousands of dollars, but so far, The Friends of Terri Wilson has reported raising and spending less than $900.

Committee treasurer Mindy Bruce said the economy made it difficult for people to donate, but they were able get enough donations to advertise regularly in the local paper and send out mailers to registered voters in the city.

Even so, when Bruce went door to door Saturday with her daughter, just to remind people to vote, she was surprised how many people still didn’t know there was an election.

“Some did jump in their cars, right then, to go vote,” Bruce said.

Neither Lamonica nor Ouellette returned a call for comment Saturday night.

In the council races, neither challenger was able to unseat the incumbent. Louis Briggs, 35, a former Krum police officer who currently serves as a consultant to natural gas drillers, lost to Joe Beall, 61, a farmer and retired employee of Peterbilt.

Melynda Rivers, 37, an administrative secretary with the Krum school district, lost to Doyle Fletcher, 69, a retired city employee who now sells racing fuel.
