Meetings aim to curb property crime
07:26 AM CDT on Monday, March 24, 2008
Denton police are cooperating with a company to educate the public about a product aimed at reducing property crime.
Two meetings will take place Wednesday. A meeting at 10 a.m. is aimed at businesses and will take place in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 215 E. McKinney St. A second meeting, aimed at the general public, is set for 7 p.m. in the Denton Central Jury Room at 601 E. McKinney St.
Denton Police spokesman Jim Bryan said representatives of a company called STOP will be at the meetings to present information about their anti-theft security plates.
The plates can be attached to commonly stolen electronic devices such as iPods or laptop computers, Bryan said. The tag allows the owner to register the identifying device for its life with STOP. If someone removes the plate, an indelible tattoo of the words “stolen property” with a contact telephone number for STOP is left imprinted on the item. Businesses or apartment complexes can buy the tags in large quantities at a lower price, the officer said.
To register or for more information, call Bryan at 940-349-8160 or e-mail jim.bryan@cityofdenton.com . For more information on STOP, visit www.stoptheft.com .
