Toy horses compete for top honors

07:28 AM CDT on Friday, July 30, 2010

By Britney Tabor / Staff Writer

A portion of Weldon’s Saddle Shop and Western Wear will be transformed Saturday into a show ring where youngsters can display their finest model horses.

The store, located at 345 E. Hickory St. in Denton, will begin its 14th annual Breyer Model Horse Show at 9 a.m. About 38 entrants, ages 16 and younger, from Texas and New Mexico have applied to participate in the competition. The model horse toys and collectibles are judged based on condition, quality, color, finish and conformation.

Last year’s Breyer Model Horse Show at Weldon’s Saddle Shop and Western Wear brought out a crowd of collectors with their model horses. This year’s show will be held Saturday.

“It’s just really kind of interesting to see a live horse show, but with models,” said Kippie Wilkinson, a contest organizer.

On contest day, participants generally bring plastic storage bins or suitcases containing their accessories and model horses, which are neatly wrapped in blankets, towels or cloths to prevent them from being scratched or scuffed, Wilkinson said. Some of the model horses displayed are never played with by contestants, she said, and are strictly owned for the purpose of being shown.

“It’s serious business for them,” Wilkinson said.

Contestants are divided into age groups and can show up to two model equines in each class — halter and performance. Competitors are responsible for knowing the breed and sex of the model horses. Judges also will critique the models based on stance and proper fitting of tack on the horse or how other props are used. Ribbons are distributed to first- through fourth-place winners in each class, and gift certificates and other prizes will be awarded.

What’s made the contest so successful, Wilkinson said, is that contest judges share their knowledge of horses with contestants throughout the day.

Whether a person is a participant or just coming to watch, the show offers the chance to learn more about horses, Wilkinson said.

Admission is free for spectators. For more information, call Weldon’s at 940-382-1921.
