Motorcycle accidents under investigation
08:26 AM CDT on Thursday, June 25, 2009
Investigations are continuing into three motorcycle accidents that claimed three lives Sunday.
Dustin Cox, 25, of Sanger, Daniel Reed, 26, of Krum and Brian J. Mitchell, 38, of Fort Worth each died in separate motorcycle accidents.
Cox died about 4 a.m. Sunday at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth as a result of a motorcycle accident in the 6000 block of West FM455, the Tarrant County medical examiner reported.
Sanger Police Chief Curtis Amyx said Wednesday that Cox was involved in a one-vehicle accident. He did not have a motorcycle license, Amyx said.
Cox was born May 24, 1984, in Bowie to Kenneth Cox and Sherry Wise. He was a self-employed carpenter.
His funeral was Wednesday.
Reed also died early Sunday, when he hit a wrecked vehicle and was thrown from his motorcycle on Interstate 35E in Carrollton, police said.
Carrollton Sgt. John Singleton said Reed was northbound on I-35E near the intersection with George Bush Turnpike. Reed and another motorcyclist were traveling together in the HOV lane when they came upon a one-vehicle accident. The initial vehicle had crashed into the center median and spun out, he said.
Reed, who was not wearing a helmet, was unable to stop and hit the vehicle, Singleton said. The other man avoided the accident and left the scene, the sergeant said.
Witnesses told investigators that the motorcyclists were traveling fast, but police have not determined their speed, Singleton said.
The investigation is continuing.
Reed was born March 10, 1983, in Irving to James T. Reed and Jo Evelyn Hood Wicks. He owned Precision Automotive in Denton.
His funeral was Tuesday.
On Sunday afternoon, Mitchell, of Fort Worth, died when the motorcycle he was riding struck a car on FM455 west of Sanger.
Trooper Lonny Haschel said Mitchell died at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth from injuries he sustained in the accident.
Haschel said Mitchell was riding east on FM455 about 12:46 p.m. when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming car. He said Mitchell was not wearing a helmet.
The accident is still under investigation, Haschel said.
