IOOF has praise for top officers
Denton lodge presents law enforcement awards10:29 PM CDT on Friday, July 4, 2008
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows Denton Lodge 82 honored several law enforcement officers with awards at the organization’s 10th annual law enforcement appreciation dinner June 27.
Law enforcement agencies were invited to nominate candidates for the officer of the year award, resulting in awards for five Denton County sheriff’s employees, two Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and a detective with the Denton Police Department.
Detective Craig Fitzgearld, a 20-year veteran of the Denton department, is a member of a special unit whose primary duties are to target habitual criminals and to locate and arrest wanted people.
Fitzgearld’s supervisor, Sgt. Brad Curtis, said that in 2007 Fitzgearld was responsible for 241 arrests related to wanted people, illegal narcotics and stolen property.
“I’m glad to see him get the recognition he deserves,” Curtis said. “I’d say that for the whole investigative division. We’re a team, but Craig displays a unique ability to be in the right place at the right time.”
Denton County Communications Officers Lt. Dana Mays, Rebecca Broussard and Rachel Perry were recognized for their quick and professional response to an incident last December when a woman was killed near Argyle. From the original 911 call, to tracking the suspect’s cellphone and updating law enforcement officers, they were instrumental in the location and apprehension of the suspect, said their supervisor, Capt. Michelle Pena.
“Radio dispatch communications is all about teamwork,” Pena said. “Almost every member of our team is eligible for this award, but the high level of professionalism displayed that night made the handling of this incident particularly noteworthy.”
Denton County Animal Control Deputy Kirk Sissney was recognized for the consistent and professional performance of his duties.
“Deputy Sissney consistently shows true compassion and dedication to the citizens of Denton County and also to our furry friends, both domestic and wild,” Patrol Capt. Mike Caley said. “He is always willing to speak to groups or individuals about animal control issues and is truly dedicated to his profession.”
Detention Officer David Strickland also received the award for his professional job performance.
“Detention Officer Strickland’s overall excellence exemplifies everything a detention officer should be: competent, punctual and willing to go beyond the call of duty,” Assistant Chief Deputy Roy Davenport said. “He is known by his co-workers as someone who can be counted on, and he is a mentor to the younger, less-experienced staff.”
DPS Troopers Woody Gosser and Dy Narng were honored as officers of the year for the local Texas Department of Public Safety for their service to the community and the agency.
“I’m very proud of all the award recipients, not only the officers from the sheriff’s office, because they are examples of the professionalism that all law enforcement officers strive for,” said Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Lee Howell. “I appreciate the Odd Fellows and the Rebekahs taking time to recognize the good work that these people have done.”
