Police Blotter

Brother injured in sword-plunger horseplay

07:12 AM CST on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Staff report

Police attributed a sword injury to an accident Sunday afternoon.

According to a police report, two brothers who share an apartment in the 1600 block of East McKinney Street were “play fighting” about 3 p.m. One brother had a sword and the other brother had a bathroom plunger.

One brother said he lunged with the plunger and it suctioned to the stomach of his brother, who was swinging the sword. In his efforts to remove his plunger from his brother’s stomach, he said he accidentally impaled himself on his brother’s sword.

He was treated for a cut that was not life-threatening at a hospital emergency room.

Other reports

800 block of West Hickory Street — Police are sorting out stories of several men who were involved in or who witnessed a fight about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Two men suffered knife cuts in the fray. Some witnesses said the knife wielder came to the party uninvited and started a fight. He left and then returned with the knife, those witnesses said.

But another witness said the uninvited guest was involved only in the first fight. Then the witness and the suspect walked down the street and were smoking cigarettes when the knife fight occurred in the yard of the party house, the witness said.

Police took the suspect to jail on outstanding warrants and are investigating the knife fight.

1000 block of West Hickory Street — Police are looking for a man who allegedly attempted to rape a woman early Sunday.

The victim said she and a man walked from Fry Street to some friends’ apartment about 1:45 a.m. The friends weren’t at home, and the man went to look for them. While he was gone, a strange man came onto the porch while the woman was waiting and tried to sexually assault her. The other man returned and hit the stranger in the face and the stranger fled, according to the police report.

2000 block of Hemmingway Street — Police found marijuana in a house early Sunday while investigating reported gunshots. Witnesses called 911 about 5 a.m. to report hearing several gunshots in the area and the sounds of two cars speeding away.

Officers saw a man coming out of the house talking on a cellphone and detained him. He said he was a visitor. They went inside looking for possible gunshot victims and found the marijuana. Then a woman drove up and said her boyfriend had fired shots at her as she drove away after an argument. An investigation is continuing.
