Town to conduct contest for logo
06:57 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 28, 2010
PROVIDENCE VILLAGE — Among the many items on the Town Council’s to-do list, one will get checked off in a spirited way. The council decided Monday to hold a contest for its first town logo.
Residents of Providence Village voted to incorporate in May, the first incorporation in Denton County since Dish, then named Clark, became a town in 2000. The voters of Providence Village selected their first mayor and five other council members in June from a field of 16 candidates.
Council member Ernie Law said that while they didn’t have a lot of specifics yet on the contest and requirements for a logo, town leaders felt it was an important step. The town must differentiate itself from the homeowners association, Law said.
The homeowners association has a logo that mixes the image of the clubhouse’s onion dome with a compass.
“We don’t want that,” Law said.
With a population of just less than 5,000, Providence Village was first organized as a special taxing district known as Fresh Water Supply District No. 9.
The special taxing district made it possible for the developer, Huffines Communities, to use bonds to finance the required water and wastewater pipelines. The district repays the bonds through a $1 per $100 valuation tax on the homes.
In addition, residents pay dues to the homeowners association, which funds community amenities such as the clubhouse and pool.
Law said he has kept the blog he started during his council campaign, www.ernielaw.com. He has been posting the latest information on council business.
Some residents expressed interest in the logo contest, but possibly not enough to ensure a good turnout among residents.
“I’d prefer something from one of our residents, but we may have to open it up,” Law said.
Contest details should be settled at the next council meeting, on Aug. 9, Law said. The council has set its regular meeting schedule for the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the Providence Community Center, 9400 Waterman Drive.
People interested in the contest, or needing to reach town leaders for other business, can call the town’s new message line at 972-987-0038. Law said messages are delivered by Google Voice to all six council members. The town also has a new e-mail address: providencevillage@pv-tx.com .
PEGGY HEINKEL-WOLFE can be reached at 940-566-6881. Her e-mail address is pheinkel-wolfe@dentonrc.com .
