Weather closings 11:25 AM CT

11:25 AM CST on Thursday, January 7, 2010

Despite the inclement weather, Denton and Denton County authorities reported no major accidents Thursday morning.

Tom Reedy, spokesman for the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, said the new Lewisville Lake toll bridge between Lake Dallas and Little Elm was closed but other roads remained open.

The Denton Airport reported a morning low of 22 degrees and 0.03 inches of precipitation.

Denton ISD officials decided at 5 a.m. to close schools, district spokeswoman Sharon Cox said. Transportation employees and Superintendent Ray Braswell checked road conditions about 4 a.m. Thursday across the district’s 180-square miles, she said, and they determined the roadways were dangerous for students and staff to travel along.

“It was the icy bridges and overpasses, and there was some black ice patches in some spots,” Cox said district staff noticed while checking roads.

Within an hour of deciding to close the district, a school messenger service called all district students and staff to notify them that schools would be closed, she said. District officials will determine later Thursday if classes will resume Friday.

Bruce Yeager, Ponder superintendent, expects classes will resume in his district Friday. However, early Thursday morning, he said he felt that roads were unfit for students and staff to try to make their way to school.

“This morning it was solid ice. I was pretty confident it would clear out during the day but I believed it wasn’t fit for students or buses to be out this morning,” Yeager said. “The roadways were pretty frozen today.”

Sanger Superintendent Jack Biggerstaff said the decision to close Sanger schools was made between 5 to 6 a.m.

“The roads were slick, particularly on the overpasses, we just determined we were going to close school,” he said. “That’s pretty much for today, it appears to the dryer air is taking some of that (ice) away on the highways, yet there are still patches. I would expect, unless something drastically changes, that we would be going to school in the morning.”
