State agency fines area firm, city of Hackberry
07:28 AM CDT on Thursday, May 21, 2009
State environmental officials in Austin on Wednesday approved $8,000 in fines assessed to the city of Hackberry and a Denton-area construction company.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deferred $1,560 of a $7,800 fine after Hackberry officials agreed to an expedited settlement over violations at its wastewater treatment plant.
While conducting a routine records review in September, a state inspector found that the treatment plant had been exceeding its permitted limits for discharges into Lewisville Lake, including excessive amounts of decaying matter and dissolved oxygen.
Terms of the deferment and expedited settlement included a plan for Hackberry to stay in compliance for three consecutive months.
Hackberry’s city administrator, Brenda Lewallen, was not available for comment Wednesday.
Lewisville-based Parkway Construction & Associates paid a $700 fine and took corrective action after a state commission field inspector found problems in September with the construction site of the Salvo Center.
State inspectors found the company had not prepared a storm water protection plan as it began construction on the 1.6-acre site at Teasley Lane and Hickory Creek Road.
Parkway officials did not return a call for comment.
