Residents of Hickory Creek Mobile Home Community in Denton said flash flooding sent water streaming through their neighborhood on Saturday. One couple’s home was evacuated after police deemed it unsafe.

When she saw the water stream into her Denton home, she screamed for help, telling emergency officials her home was being swept away.

Once police officers arrived, they said her home wasn’t safe to live in, and shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Patricia and Arturo Villalobos grabbed their keys and wallets and left.

The couple’s neighbors reported that waters Saturday night reached 5 feet off the ground and silt was swept through the homes and into the streets.

The husband and wife were able to bunk with their daughter’s family down the street, but they said this wasn’t the first time their home in Hickory Creek Mobile Home Community in Denton has flooded.

A couple of years ago, the same flash flood waters seemed to rise out of an abundance of rainwater, Patricia Villalobos said.

During the Texas springtime, especially after days of heavy rainfall, flash floods like the one at the mobile home park are probable, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Dunn.

And the weather service issued a flash flood warning for Denton County from about 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, she said.

“There were several storms across Denton County earlier and the threat, with the ground already saturated, is if it [the rain] comes down so hard and so fast, it doesn’t have anywhere to go,” Dunn said.

Arturo and Patricia Villalobos’ mobile home started to shift because of flash flooding at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, and the couple was told to leave their home by police officers.

Along with the damage to the Villalobos home, several homes at the mobile home park had minimal damage, said Jennifer Jackson, a spokeswoman for the Dallas-area chapter of the American Red Cross.

“We, as a community, were very lucky that we had minimal damage occur,” Jackson said. “Smaller amounts of water were pushed out [of residences] and several people in Denton County received assistance.”

Several single-family residences in Oak Point also were flooded, she said.

It’s important to be prepared and be aware if a flash flood could happen in your area, Jackson said.

“Be aware of where you are living. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, but you can limit the amount of damage,” she said. “You definitely need to keep an eye on things and know what’s going on so you can react proactively.”

The Red Cross gave the Villalobos family some cleaning supplies, but the couple said they are worried about when the next storm will hit.

Other residents of the mobile home park said the flood waters also run through the residences and the streets of the community every time it rains.

Officials with the mobile home park were unavailable to comment on the possibility of floods late Sunday.

For resident Maria Sanchez, Saturday night was a scary one.

As Sanchez watched the flood waters reach her deck, she thought she would have to run for higher ground with her children.

“In a matter of minutes, as soon as it started raining, it flooded,” she said. “I don’t feel safe [when] the rain does this.”
