07:18 AM CST on Friday, November 9, 2007
Denton County Sheriff Benny Parkey presented a scholarship check to the child of a law enforcement officer Tuesday.
Matthew L. Edrington of Avery, a sophomore business major at the University of North Texas, was awarded a scholarship check of $500 from the Sheriff’s Association of Texas through its youth scholarship program.
He is the son of Linda and Robert L. Edrington, former sheriff of Red River County.
The scholarships are awarded twice a year to eligible children or wards of Texas sheriff’s office employees or peace officers who are pursuing an academic degree at a college or university.
Parkey urges all law enforcement officers in Denton County with children in college to apply for the scholarships. Applications must be received by March 1 for the spring semester and by Oct. 15 for the fall semester.
