Early voting wraps up today

07:32 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 5, 2009

By Britney Tabor / Staff Writer

Today is the final day to vote early in area city and school district elections.

In Denton, four City Council races and two at-large school board seats are on the ballot. Voters in Corinth, Krum and Aubrey will select a mayor. School board elections also will be conducted in Aubrey, Argyle and Pilot Point.

Election day is Saturday.

In Denton school board races, incumbent and retired professor Curtis Ramsey is seeking his sixth term against real estate agent Sheryl English for Place 1. In Place 2, incumbent Jeanetta Smith, a retired schoolteacher, faces city finance employee Tony Puente.

Voters in four Denton City Council districts will cast ballots for candidates to represent them on the seven-member council.

In District 1, which covers central and Southeast Denton, incumbent and retired nutrition coordinator Charlye Heggins, who hopes to clinch her third term, will face freelance journalist Eliborio “Eli Gemini” Beltrán and self-employed businessman Bob Clifton.

Running in District 2, which covers the city’s northeast and far-east region, are retired principal Dalton Gregory, information technology manager Michael Roby and real estate appraiser Roger Strahan. The candidate elected to the seat will succeed Rudy Moreno, who won the seat in a special election last year. Moreno is not running for the full two-year term.

Five candidates are running for the District 3 position, which represents the city’s central and northwest region. They are marketing specialist Jim Engelbrecht, computer analyst Amy Manuel, business owner Hatice I. Salih and college students Sam Casey and Andrew “Teets” Teeter. Council member Jack Thomson will leave the position this year because of term limits.

District 4 incumbent Chris Watts, a lawyer and real estate investor, is running for his second term against write-in candidate and substitute teacher Phil Kregel. The district generally includes southwest Denton.

In Corinth, voter turnout has been low, with 192 ballots cast last week, said Corinth City Secretary Kim Pence.

There, council members Shannon Bryan and Paul Ruggiere are running to replace Mayor Vic Burgess, who did not seek re-election.

Pence said she anticipates voter numbers to increase today and Saturday.

“We’re hoping it’s more than what it’s been the last seven days of early voting,” Pence said Monday. “It’s really hard to tell. I hoping it will be a good turnout, but you never know.”

A phone call to the city of Denton on voter turnout was not immediately returned Monday.
