Former Rangers pitcher hospitalized in Denton

08:43 AM CST on Friday, November 13, 2009

Former Texas Rangers pitcher John Wetteland was taken to a Denton hospital Thursday afternoon after police were called to his home over concerns about his mental health, Denton County sheriff’s Sgt. Roger Griggs said.

Wetteland was taken to Denton Regional Medical Center after meeting authorities outside his Bartonville home and saying he “needed help,” Griggs said. He displayed no physical injuries, Griggs said.

A hospital employee who answered the phone Thursday said Wetteland was not registered at the hospital.

Starting in 1989, Wetteland spent 12 years in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos and New York Yankees before finishing his career with the Rangers from 1997 through 2000. He also has taught Bible classes and coached junior high football and baseball at Liberty Christian School in Argyle.

Wetteland now works as a pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners.

A Mariners spokesman told the Seattle Times on Thursday afternoon that the team hadn’t gathered enough information to comment.
