Driver killed in Loop 288 accident

2 men hospitalized in two-car accident

12:04 AM CST on Monday, December 7, 2009

By Candace Carlisle / Staff Writer

A 21-year-old Denton man died when he lost control of his car, crossed the median in the 900 block of North Loop 288 and struck an oncoming car Sunday morning, said Denton police Sgt. James Brett.

The driver, Cory Van Gilder, died from multiple blunt trauma injuries, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Van Gilder was driving northbound on the six-lane road about 6:03 a.m. when his car suddenly crossed the street’s median and plowed into an oncoming car traveling southbound in the center lane, Brett said.

Van Gilder’s car was torn in two from the force of the collision, Brett said.

Van Gilder’s passenger and the driver of the oncoming car were both taken by helicopter ambulance to Parkland hospital in Dallas for treatment.

By Sunday morning, the 21-year-old male passenger was in surgery for serious injuries and the 25-year-old male driver was in intensive care, Brett said.

Denton police are investigating, and it is unknown if speed or intoxication were factors, Brett said.

“The accident is still under investigation,” he said.
