Blotter: Investigator: Caretakers took care of themselves

Pair hired to help out 96-year-old allegedly drain majority of funds

11:43 PM CST on Friday, February 26, 2010

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A probate court investigator told Denton police Thursday that two caretakers had taken as much as two-thirds of a million dollars from a 96-year-old woman.

Police learned that the victim and her husband had hired one of the women in 1993 to care for him. He died in 1994, according to the report, but his wife hired the woman to stay on to care for her. At some point, the victim apparently recruited a second caretaker to help her.

Witnesses recently reported that the caretakers seemed to be spending more money than they could account for. The probate court assigned a lawyer and a guardian for the woman and assigned the investigator to look into the case.

The investigator told police that he learned that one of the caretakers paid the woman’s credit card bills and had access to the card. The bills showed she spent an average of more than $700 a month on groceries, according to the report, but the victim’s pantries contained little food. The credit card records showed an average of more than $200 in fast-food payments, yet the victim never went out of her house.

The caretaker has been paying herself a salary of about $60,000 a year, the investigator said.

According to the police report, investments of more than $1 million in 1994 had been “spent down” to $230,000 by moving funds to an account that the caretaker could access.

A police investigation is continuing.

Other reports

100 block of University Drive — A man called police to report that another man struck his car in a parking lot and then drove away. The caller said he followed the second man, and they both pulled into another parking lot.

The caller remained on the telephone and said the other man was walking toward his car carrying a baseball bat. The caller told dispatchers that he had a license to carry a gun and was pointing the weapon at the other man.

The second man then walked into a nearby building, the caller said.

The first officer to arrive found the second man inside the building and walked outside with him to inquire about the incident. He told the officer that he did not strike the other man’s car.

When he pulled over, the man said, he saw the other driver pointing a gun at him, so he grabbed a pipe from his car for self-defense. Both men said they were afraid for their lives.

The officer noted there was slight damage and transferred paint on both vehicles. He counseled the men on better ways to have handled the situation, according to the police report.

400 block of Buladora Drive, Little Elm area — A man reported to Denton County sheriff’s deputies that he found a German shepherd with a crossbow arrow all the way through its body. The dog showed up on his front porch, and he didn’t know who it belonged to.

The deputy found the dog’s owner, who said the dog was fine the last time he saw it. He did not know who shot the dog with the arrow.

He asked that the dog be euthanized because he could not afford to take it to a veterinarian.
