Blotter: Police tactical team fields call to help woman
11:33 PM CST on Friday, March 5, 2010
Denton police tactical team members responded to a house in the 1400 block of Sherman Drive on Thursday night to help get a woman out of a bedroom where her boyfriend was refusing to allow her to leave, according to a report.
A woman called 911 about 9:30 p.m. She said her brother had been fighting with his girlfriend and had attacked her when she tried to help the girlfriend.
She told arriving officers that the couple had returned home separately from a bar and had been screaming at each other ever since. She said both were intoxicated and that her brother was out of control.
Officers could hear a man cursing loudly, a woman screaming and thumps and thuds, according to the police report.
Police went upstairs and found a locked door with the couple still fighting in the room. They told the couple to come out, but the man said they would not. They heard him moving furniture in front of the door.
Police asked the woman if she was all right and she said yes. But she sounded scared. The man yelled that they didn’t need help and to go away. Officers called for the tactical team.
There followed several hours of talking between the team negotiator and the couple.
Finally at about 12:40 a.m. Friday, the woman unlocked the door. Officers pushed into the room and two of them grabbed the woman to get her out of harm’s way, while the others ordered the man onto the floor and handcuffed him.
The woman said the fight started when she asked her boyfriend to leave the bar and he refused, so she came home without him. They started to argue when he returned, she said, and when the sister and another roommate tried to intervene, there was a scuffle. They went upstairs and he “tore apart” the room, according to the report.
The man was charged with assault and unlawful restraint.
Other reports
3000 block of South Interstate 35E — A man reported to police about 6:25 p.m. Thursday that another man pointed a rifle at him in a fit of road rage. The victim said he pulled out of a parking lot in front of another car, angering the driver. That driver drove very close to his bumper, he said, and then tried to run him off the right side of the road.
When he tried to pass the car, the other driver tried to run him off the left side of the road, the victim said.
He threw up his hands as if to ask what the problem was, the victim said.
The other driver motioned for him to pull into a nearby parking lot and he did, exiting his car. The other driver then pointed a rifle at him, the victim said, and he backed away, getting the driver’s license plate number as he passed the back of the car. Then he called 911 as the other driver fled.
After telling his story, he declined to press charges since he caused the road-rage incident by pulling in front of the other driver, according to the police report.
2700 block of Robinson Road, Denton area — A woman called Denton County sheriff’s deputies for help after arriving at her home for lunch and discovering she was a burglary victim.
