The woman, 40, suffered a broken back in the fall, but both victims are expected to survive, police spokesman Ryan Grelle said. Police identified the suspect as Silvano Uriostogui, 47, and issued two arrest warrants on charges of aggravated assault.

Police records show the woman had visited the police department earlier Thursday to report that Uriostogui, whom she was divorcing, had been following her to find out where she lived. The woman filed a harassment report, saying Uriostogui had called her cellphone Wednesday night and threatened her life. “If I see you with another guy, you’re going to regret it,” the woman reported Uriostogui told her. “I hope you have money to pay for the funerals.”

Grelle defended the department’s handling of the case.

“The officer did the appropriate thing, took the report and filed it like he told her” he would, Grelle said. “It was just a horrific set of circumstances that he [the suspect] was able to locate her.”

Police are unsure how Uriostogui found the woman Thursday night, Grelle said.

Both victims were treated at a Denton hospital. Grelle said the woman suffered shattered vertebrae in her back and was undergoing surgeries.

“She can wiggle her toes, but she can’t move her legs,” Grelle said.

Grelle did not know the male victim’s status. The man, 22, suffered stab wounds to the forearm and stomach, according to Uriostogui’s arrest warrant affidavit.

In the emergency room Friday, the male victim told police he met the woman through a telephone chat line a week ago, and that they arranged to meet Thursday, according to the affidavit.

They met at the woman’s apartment about 9:40 p.m. and were lying on a bed and talking when another man entered the apartment and said something like, “Here you are. I thought you lived alone,” the affidavit states. The man then stabbed both victims, according to the affidavit.

The woman identified the intruder as Uriostogui, according to the affidavit.

The male victim escaped by jumping through a closed second-story window, Grelle said. The suspect then tossed the woman through the window, he said.

Uriostogui was described as 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with a shaved head or extremely short hair.

Police informed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of the arrest warrants because they believe Uriostogui is in the country illegally, Grelle said.

Other reports

3200 block of Fallmeadow Road — A man told police that three men and a woman forced their way into his apartment Tuesday night, used zip ties to restrain him and his roommate and stole several items, according to a police report.

During the incident, the suspects asked the victims odd questions, including “Where’s the weed?”, “Where’s the money?” and “Where’s the gun?”, the police report states. One of the victims told police he and his roommate had moved into the apartment the day before and did not know the suspects.

1500 block of East McKinney Street — Police questioned a woman whom they said attempted to use counterfeit money Thursday at the Denton County tax office.

The woman, 49, tried to pay for a car title transfer using three fake $20 bills, according to a police report.

Under questioning, she said she got the bills from a Krum convenience store and didn’t know they were counterfeit, the report states.

300 block of Lakeview Drive — A woman told Denton County sheriff’s deputies someone tried to abduct her 8-year-old daughter Wednesday afternoon while the girl was playing in the street.

The girl told authorities that an older man with a long, gray beard grabbed her arm and tried to pull her toward his truck, but that she screamed, pulled free and ran away. A deputy searched the neighborhood for a truck matching the girl’s description but couldn’t find one, according to the report.

1800 block of Brewer Road, Aubrey — A woman told sheriff’s deputies that someone stole a goat from a locked pen behind her home overnight May 2. The woman said it was the third theft of an animal from her property since September, according to the report.
