07:19 AM CDT on Friday, June 20, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Police are looking for a customer who helped himself to the cash drawer at a supermarket Wednesday when the cashier’s back was turned, according to a report.

The incident happened about 3:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Interstate 35E. The cashier said she was giving change to someone and briefly turned away from the register. The next man in line lunged at the register, grabbed a handful of cash and ran from the store, according to the report.

Witnesses described him as a black male in his 30s, about 6 feet tall. He wore a dark-colored basketball jersey and a bright-blue kerchief on his head. He either had a gold tooth or wore a gold earring, according to the witnesses.

Other reports

1100 block of North Interstate 35E — Someone pried open the back door of a convenience store Thursday and took money from the cash register.

According to a police report, the alarm sounded at 4:29 a.m. Arriving officers found the back door was open and showed pry marks. The intruders also tried to pry open an ATM without success before finding the cash register in a storage area and emptying it.

1800 block of Westminster Street — Someone rigged a toilet in a second-story apartment to overflow, heavily damaging the unit and the apartment below, according to a Wednesday report.

The apartment manager reported both apartments are empty. Someone propped a toilet paper dispenser under the flow valve to keep it running and then pointed it at the floor. After it ran for a time, water went through the flooring and flooded the apartment below.

The manager said one maintenance man was fired recently and the second one abruptly quit the next day. One of them might have had something to do with the damage, according to the report.
