Blotter: Woman reports gasoline used in drive-by dousing

08:06 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 24, 2009

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

A woman, her sister and the sister’s 2-year-old child were shot with gasoline from a large water gun Sunday night, they told Denton police Monday.

The woman said the three were outdoors in front of their home in the 700 block of Hill Alley at about 11 p.m. when a brown Chevrolet Caprice slowly rolled by. A minute later, the car was driven by again, she said.

Someone in the car fired the water gun, striking all three on the arms and clothing. The blue and orange Super Soaker-style water gun held gasoline, she said.

The victim said she recognized two women in the car before it drove away but did not know why they would soak them with gasoline. The three victims were not injured, according to the report.

An investigation is continuing.

Other reports

1200 block of East Mulberry Street — A woman told police that a man she thought was being a good Samaritan stole her handbag Monday night.

She said she had walked to a grocery store from a nearby hotel where she is staying and a man named “Steve” asked her if she needed a ride home. She agreed but asked if he minded stopping for a minute at a house where she had left some of her belongings. He agreed to do that.

When they reached the house, he parked on the street. She intended to be inside only a moment, so she left her handbag in the car.

As soon as she started toward the house, she heard tires squealing, she said. She looked back, and the man was speeding away in his white late-’90s Ford pickup.

With the purse, she lost her cellphone, $800 from a paycheck she had just cashed, a debit card, a gold and diamond ring, a silver class ring, her driver’s license and her Social Security card.

She believes “Steve” lives in Aubrey, she said. An investigation is continuing.

700 block of Schmitz Street — Two women who were hopping around begging to use her bathroom stole a woman’s medication, she told police Monday.

The woman said her sister was visiting her Sunday afternoon and two 18-year-old women arrived to give her a ride home. The women were “hopping and jumping around” saying they were in bad need of a bathroom, she said. She told them to use the guest bathroom at the front of the house.

But instead, they headed for her bedroom and its adjacent bathroom at the back of the house, she said. She yelled at them to come out of there and use the guest bath, but they stayed out of sight for several minutes.

She knows them only as “Abby” and “Haley.”

Later she discovered that a bottle of medication she had in her purse in her bedroom was missing. The bottle contained about 100 Xanax pills, she said.

Xanax is an anti-anxiety medication often abused by illegal narcotics users to lessen the panic some drugs cause.

3400 block of Meadowlark Street — Officers responding to an assault call found a man with head injuries and one eye swollen shut. He said his neighbor punched him 10 to 12 times in the face.

He had been to the store, he said, and was attacked as soon as he got out of his roommate’s pickup.

The victim said the man’s wife had been visiting him to complain about her husband. The suspect was angry when he heard the victim had made a racial slur against him and had been making sexual comments about the wife, according to the report.

The suspect’s wife said her husband was angry when she told him about the sexual comments and the racial slur. She pulled her husband off the neighbor as he was beating him, according to the report.

The husband was arrested on an assault charge.
