Blotter: Report: 10 lose items in apartment break-in
08:43 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Someone kicked in the door of an apartment and stole from at least 10 residents, according to a police report.
The roommates reported about 3:20 a.m. Sunday that they were all away except for one man who was intoxicated and passed out in a bedroom. When they returned to the apartment in the 1500 block of Meadows Street, they noticed the damaged door and numerous missing items.
Eight people made formal complaints listing their lost property. Two others said they lost property but it was not worth making a written report.
Three people were listed on the lease, but the others were staying there either informally or for one night.
Listed among the missing property were five laptop computers, nine pairs of shoes, two Xbox game players, a projector, two televisions, $450 in cash, clothing, jewelry and a sound system.
Officers questioned the lone man who had been in the apartment about the three doors that had been kicked in and how he slept through the noise. He said that he was really, really drunk.
Other reports
600 block of Londonderry Lane — A woman reported to police that a former boyfriend asked for her help and then stole from her.
She said she broke up with the man a year ago. On Sunday, he called and said he was homeless and hungry. She agreed to get some food for him and said she would meet him in a parking lot.
The woman said she bought $54 worth of groceries and a hamburger and fries for him. He wanted to get inside her car and she refused, she said.
But he climbed inside anyway and would not leave. She was afraid and got out to call 911. When she came back to the car, he jumped out holding the food and her wallet, the report states. He ran away before police arrived.
The woman said her wallet contained $800 cash.
The man called the woman while the responding officer was with her. The officer answered the phone and told the man he needed to bring back the stolen property. The man denied taking anything from the woman.
3400 block of Joyce Lane — Officers responded about 9:15 p.m. Sunday to two reports: one that a man had pushed his way into an apartment and threatened the resident’s nephew and a second report that the man was bleeding from knife wounds.
The officers found the apartment locked and no one would open the door.
Firefighters forced open the door to attend to anyone inside who was wounded. They found the man indicated in the reports bleeding from knife cuts on both arms.
While paramedics tended his wounds, officers talked to witnesses. After talking to several people, officers determined that the man was upset because his girlfriend had broken up with him and believed the nephew had come between them. He cut himself numerous times with a razor blade and recorded a video of it with his cellphone, the report states.
Then he sent the video, along with the song “Watch Me Bleed” to the pair before telling the woman that her nephew would be dead by morning, the report states.
