Blotter: Police seize 3 dogs after reported attacks
07:17 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Denton police seized three dogs Sunday, one of them an injured pit bull, after they allegedly attacked several people in their north Denton neighborhood and a neighbor shot one of the dogs.
Police began receiving calls about 7 p.m. that the dogs were running loose in the neighborhood and people were frightened.
An officer responded and found a man standing in the 3800 block of Thunderbird Street with his hands on his head, according to the police report. He told the officer that he was armed and that he had a license to legally carry a gun. The officer took the gun for safekeeping and asked the man what was happening.
The man said he was taking out his garbage when the dogs charged him and took the garbage. He hit them with the garbage cart, he said, and they ran off. He went into his house and retrieved his pistol. Then he got on his motorcycle to find the dogs and make sure they were not attacking anyone else.
A 69-year-old woman was standing with the man. She said she was in her yard and saw the dogs running at a young couple pushing a baby stroller. The couple ran into a neighbor’s yard to avoid the dogs. The woman said the dogs then ran at her. The man then shot the pit bull, and all the dogs ran away, according to the report.
The woman said the dogs had attacked her and her husband several times and she had called for animal control officers.
Police then went to the man’s home where the dogs were penned in the backyard.
He said his dogs never left the driveway and that the man with the gun rode up on a motorcycle and shot the pit bull.
A car pulled up with several family members who were yelling that someone was going to pay for shooting the dog, according to the report.
The dog was shot through the chest and back but the bullet apparently hit no vital organs.
The owner refused to take the dog for medical treatment, according to the report.
The officer talked to the owner and his wife and they eventually agreed to surrender the dogs to animal control officers.
No charges were filed against the man who shot the dog.
Other reports
5300 block of East McKinney Street — A man reported to police Sunday that at some point since Aug. 31 someone entered the mobile home he was moving out of and took all his furniture. He valued the furniture at $35,000.
7200 block of Starburst Trail — A check from a man who called himself “Larry Green” was returned to a bank recently, revealing an apparent fraud scheme.
A woman said she placed two kayaks for sale on Craigslist, an Internet classifieds site. A man offered to buy them, and they agreed on a price of $1,000 for both.
A woman who said she represented Green then called with instructions for the local seller. She said the check would be for more than the asking price and she should send the rest of the money to an address in Chicago.
The woman received a check for $3,590. She sent the money to the address as she had been instructed, she said. Now the bank says she is liable for all the money, according to the police report.
