Blotter: Missing man found with help of alerts
07:20 AM CDT on Thursday, October 29, 2009
Community involvement and a new law enforcement tool helped find an Alzheimer’s patient who had been missing for more than 18 hours over the weekend.
The 84-year-old man was last seen about 3:30 p.m. Saturday at his home in the Township II area of Denton. He apparently walked away from the house, and concerned relatives called for help from police when they had not found him by 7:45 p.m.
Officers searched but could not locate him. About 10:30 p.m., a “silver alert” was put out to notify other agencies of the man’s disappearance. Police also notified the public via a Nixle alert. A homeowners’ association also sent out e-mails to neighbors to be on the lookout.
About 10:15 a.m. Sunday a neighbor of the man was driving on Teasley Lane and saw him. She had received both the Nixle alert and e-mails, according to Officer Ryan Grelle, and she took the man home. He was unharmed.
