Blotter: Woman caught on camera stealing from store

12:17 AM CST on Sunday, November 8, 2009

By Bj Lewis / Staff Writer

A recent unauthorized shopping spree at the Denton location of a national retail chain was stopped by store security, and police arrested the woman seen stealing items from the store.

Officers responded to the store and found the suspect being held by the store’s loss prevention officer, according to a police report.

The loss prevention officer said the woman was observed on camera in the jewelry department, placing a pair of reading glasses under her purse where it sat in the cart. The woman then grabbed a number of rings and held them along with a pair of scissors taken from her purse, the report said.

The suspect was observed going to the women’s clothing department and putting some undergarments down the back of her pants. About that time, she cut the packaging on the rings and placed them in her shirt. She continued to walk around and put other items — including candles — in her purse. The woman proceeded to the checkout line and paid for a few groceries. She was stopped and detained after exiting the store, the report said.

Other reports

2800 block of West University — Police were called to the scene of an argument between a man and woman, according to a police report. The man was reported to have slapped the woman and kicked her belongings out of his car.

When the officer arrived, the man was sitting in the car and the woman was standing behind it. The pair at first claimed they hadn’t been arguing but then relented, saying they were playing around, according to the report.

The officer asked for identification, but only the man had his. The woman gave the officer a name, and when he ran a standard warrant check on the two, it came back with a Grayson County warrant for the woman. She was arrested and placed in the officer’s car. She asked the officer to get her medicine from the man’s car. When the officer retrieved it, he saw the name did not match the name the woman gave him.

When pressed, the woman said she feared she had a warrant under her own name and gave the officer her sister’s name, thinking her sister did not, according to the report.

7500 block of Valley Stream Road — Officers responded to a burglary of a vehicle. A couple reported that while they were at the movies, their car was broken into.

The couple had parked the vehicle in the middle of the parking lot, away from other cars. The closest vehicle was a pickup three spaces away, with a man inside. The couple went to the front of the building to check the show times. When they returned to their vehicle, the pickup sped away. The man noticed a door handle had been pried, and the woman’s purse was gone. Contents of the purse included a driver’s license, Social Security card and $60.

The couple rushed home, worried about the house keys in the purse and called to report their debit cards stolen. Officers began investigating at a gas station where it was reported the card was used after it was stolen, according to the report.

Denton County Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in these or other crimes. Callers will remain anonymous. Call 1-800-388-TIPS (8477). Reach the Denton police narcotics tip line at 940-565-5801.
