Blotter: Report: Punch thrown outside bowling alley

12:48 AM CST on Sunday, December 7, 2008

By Candace Carlisle / Staff Writer

Former pledge sisters at the University of North Texas turned against members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in the early morning hours Friday because they said they were dismissed from the group, according to a police report.

Two women told police that three former pledge sisters were constantly harassing them in public for their dismissal from the sorority after a wrongdoing surfaced that cost the group $1,000 in fines.

But the verbal harassment turned physical Friday at 12:40 a.m. outside a bowling alley and bar in the 1200 block of East University Drive.

The three former pledge sisters started pushing and shoving the other two women, until one of the former pledge sisters punched one female in the left cheek, according to the report.

The fight was broken up by security and by the three suspects left before police arrived.

There were no abrasions on the female’s left cheek, but an ice pack may have stopped the swelling, according to the report.

Other reports

5100 block of East McKinney Street — The contents of a 16-year-old’s purse were stolen Saturday morning after she left it outside the field house near the football field at Ryan High School, said Denton police Sgt. Brian Blalock. A wallet, MP3 player, cellphone and $5 were taken, said Blalock.

2700 block of Colorado Boulevard — A community living apartment turned less friendly when a separate apartment off the shared living area was cleverly broken into, said Blalock. When an MP3 player was noticed missing by a 21-year-old student Saturday morning, a police officer noticed a white string tied to the locking knob and deduced that someone pried open the door from marks left and locked it back up with the string, Blalock said.

500 block of Bryan Street — Someone noticed that a vacant building next to a pharmacy was forced open and called police, Blalock said. Although there were no items taken from the empty building, police noticed that someone tried to get from the vacant building into the pharmacy, but was stopped by a cinder block wall, he said.

2300 block of West University Drive — A 21-year-old male tried to shoplift five cases of Bud Light from a grocery store by running a shopping cart out of the store and across a nearby field to a getaway vehicle, Blalock said. Police caught and arrested the man and took him to city jail, Blalock said. The stolen beer was valued at $119.02.
