Garage sale to benefit pair

A benefit garage sale for Jackie Murphree and Brooklyn Davison is set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at The Downtowner, 725 N. Elm St. in Denton. Sale items will include appliances, household items, toys, clothing and more. Proceeds will assist Murphree, who was hit by a drunken driver in August 2007, and Davison, a 20-month-old girl who has stage 4 cancer. All proceeds will be split to go toward medical expenses. Volunteers for the event are welcome.

 

 

Oktoberfest fundraiser slated today at church

Oktoberfest, a traditional German celebration, will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today.

Expect oompah music, games for children, a cakewalk, a dunking booth and desserts. Beverages will be available.

The event will raise money to benefit Habitat for Humanity and Denton Community Food Center.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match the funds raised.

Cost will be $10 for adults and children older than 12; $5 for children ages 5 to 12; and children younger than 5 get in free.

Maximum cost for a family is $40.

Book discussion set today at local store

Jervis Underwood will moderate a book discussion of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game at 3 p.m. today at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 2201 S. Interstate 35 in Denton.

New exhibit on Texas writers at library

A Humanities Texas exhibit called “Texas Writers” is on display through October at North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St.

The exhibit highlights Texas authors from the mid-20th century to present day, and it features author portraits, quotes, books, workplaces and narrative settings.
