Les Cockrell: Garage sale, cook-offs part of fundraiser in Krum
Out & About08:18 AM CDT on Thursday, May 27, 2010
A garage sale set for Saturday will be the opening event for a fundraising effort planned to benefit Mike Ripple of Krum, who was diagnosed with hemangiopericytoma several years ago.
The garage sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Krum Middle School, 805 E. McCart St. Anyone who would like to donate items should call Teresa Kilgore at 817-614-9083.
The fundraiser will continue June 6 at Krum High School, 811 E. McCart, with a bake sale, silent auction and events designed to test the skills of area cooks.
Hamburger cook-offs for restaurants and backyard cooks will be featured, with set-up for cooks at 2 p.m. All meat must be cooked on site. Cooks furnish grills and ingredients, and contestants will have one hour to prepare entries.
The restaurant challenge will begin at 3:30 p.m., with judging at 4:30 p.m. Entry fee is $50.
The Open Backyard Grillmaster Challenge will begin at 3 p.m., with judging at 4 p.m. Entry fee is $25.
A salsa challenge will have a $10 entry fee. Salsa entries must be turned in by 2 p.m., and the winner will be announced at 5 p.m.
Other events will include a 3-point shootout that’s set to begin at 2 p.m., and a punt, pass and kick competition that will begin at 3:30 p.m. Entry fee for each is $5.
A flag football tournament for five-member teams also is planned. Players must be 18 or older, and entry fee is $135 per team. Cost for each additional player is $7.
Organizers are collecting donations, including items for the silent and live auctions, to help support the event, said Leila Patton, an event organizer. The silent auction will be from 2 to 5 p.m.; the live auction will begin at 6 p.m.
“There has been a lot of response,” Patton said. “I think we have a lot of live and silent auction items.”
Families should find plenty of fun activities, Patton said, including the bake sale, which will offer items from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
“There will be bounce houses, a dunking booth and face painting,” she said, adding that T-shirts will be sold and donation bottles will be available for those who want to make a contribution.
Those who can’t offer financial support are invited to volunteer, Patton said.
“There will be plenty to do, if they want to help,” she said.
A hamburger supper at 5 p.m. will round out the day’s activities, Patton said. Cost is $7 per person.
Ripple has undergone several surgeries and radiation treatments for tumors caused by his rare condition, and the fundraiser will help with mounting expenses. He said he and his family appreciate the support.
“I can’t say enough about the folks who have picked it up and gone with it,” he said.
Advance tickets for the hamburger supper are available at Double L Salon and Patton Insurance in Krum.

A classic car show and a concert planned in Aubrey on Saturday should provide a couple of great holiday weekend entertainment options.
The car show, sponsored by Lucy’s Moms on Main, will be from 1 to 5 p.m., said Krys Murray, restaurant co-owner.
“We wanted to attract cars from all over the metroplex,” she said, adding that there should be plenty of classic vehicles for visitors to see.
The cars will be on display in downtown Aubrey, Murray said, and concessions will be available. Open registration will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the show will help support the Aubrey Main Street Committee, Murray said.
“We want to give back to the community,” she said.
Music in the Park, presented by the Aubrey Main Street Committee and the Aubrey Economic Development Corporation, is scheduled to get under way at 4:30 p.m. with a performance by Pilot Point native Ryan Ready, according to organizers.
Singer-songwriter Austin Cunningham, whose songs have been recorded by several top country music artists, will perform from 6 to 9 p.m.
Music in the Park will be the first event held on Aubrey’s new Festival Grounds Stage, which was a project of the Main Street committee and funded by the economic development corporation, organizers said. The stage will be used for various city and Main Street committee events.
Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the music, along with their own snacks and beverages, organizers said.
The festival grounds are in downtown Aubrey at 301 S. Main St. Music in the Park is sponsored by PointBank and Owens Welding.

The first weekend in June should provide a great opportunity for golfers who want to compete for a good cause.
The Pilot Point Chamber of Commerce is planning its 13th annual golf tournament for Saturday, June 5, at the Bridges Golf Club in Gunter.
In addition, American Legion Post 550 in Pilot Point is signing up sponsors and golfers for its annual golf tournament, set for Sunday, June 6, at the Northern Challenge Golf Course in Sherman.
Registration for the chamber tournament will begin at 7:15 a.m. June 5, and play will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Proceeds will benefit chamber projects.
The tournament will feature a four-person scramble and a poker run, organizers said. Entry fee is $400 per team or $100 for individual players.
Sponsorships are available, said Karen Walterscheid, executive director of the chamber, and the deadline to sign up as a sponsor is Friday.
Golfers will have a little longer to make up their minds about participating, she said.
“Teams, we can take them later,” she said.
For more information about the chamber tournament, call Walterscheid at 940-686-5385, Deke Alexander at 940-686-7049 or Jerry Alford at 940-391-8797.
The tourney sponsored by American Legion Post 550 will begin at 8 a.m. June 6, and it will be a three-person scramble. Cost to enter is $180 per team or $60 for individual players.
Hole sponsorships are available for $50 apiece, and the post is accepting donations of items to be given away in a raffle, organizers said.
The deadline for entry forms is June 3. Golfers should go to the post, located at 905 N. Foundation Drive in Pilot Point, to pick up and return entry forms.
All proceeds from the tournament will support veterans, said Chuck Meaders, an acting post officer.
“It’s for our troops,” he said. “The post just mailed off 12 boxes of items to soldiers in Afghanistan.”
The post also supports area veterans who have returned home, Meaders said.
For more information, call the post at 940-686-9901.

The Denton Police Department and the Denton Fire Department are each scheduled to field a team in the Battle of the Badge Softball Tournament, which benefits the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County.
This year’s tournament is set for June 5 at the Lake Park Softball Complex in Lewisville, said Dan Leal, executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center.
“The Denton Police Department and the Denton Fire Department will play each other at 10 a.m.,” Leal said. “The fire department is the defending champion. That will be kind of neat for Denton people.”
Nine teams have signed up for the eighth annual tournament, Leal said.
The action will get under way at 9 a.m. with a game between the Lewisville Police Department and the Lewisville Fire Department.
“It’s a double-elimination tournament, so teams will play at least twice,” Leal said.
Admission to the tournament is $5 for ages 13 and older and free for those 12 and younger.
In addition to softball, visitors will find bounce houses and face painting for the kids, concessions, a silent auction and more, Leal said.
The softball complex is at Lake Park Road and North Mill Street in Lewisville. For more information about the Children’s Advocacy Center, visit www.cacdc.org .

The first “Caring for Kids” fundraiser held earlier this month to benefit the Nelson Children’s Center in Denton was a success, bringing in about $114,000 and far exceeding the event’s goal, said Scott Carroll, vice president of marketing and communications for Lutheran Social Services, which operates the center.
The fundraiser was held at Delaney Vineyards & Winery in Grapevine and featured music, food and silent and live auctions, Carroll said.
“The event was the first of its kind to raise money for the Nelson Center,” he said. “We weren’t real sure what to expect.”
The center is a residential treatment facility providing help, healing and hope to children who have suffered severe abuse and neglect, Carroll said, and supporters were generous in providing financial support.
State funding covers roughly 70 percent of the cost of operating the center, he said, but remaining expenses must be covered by the center.
During the fundraiser, officials expressed a need for a new educational resource building at the center that would be used by school counselors, diagnosticians, mentors and tutors.
The center is an affiliated ministry of Lutheran Social Services of the South, headquartered in Austin. Visit www.nelsonchildrenscenter.org for more information.
