More hats in the ring as filing period’s end nears

08:36 AM CDT on Sunday, March 8, 2009

With one day left in the allotted period, three candidates have filed to fill two seats on the Denton School Board and one more has filed for the Denton City Council.

Corinth’s mayor isn’t seeking re-election, but the mayor of Shady Shores is.

School board incumbents Jeanetta Smith and Curtis Ramsey are seeking re-election. Sheryl English, a Denton resident making her first run for public office, also has filed for one of the two available seats on the seven-member board.

The period for candidates to file for seats on area city councils, school boards and boards for special taxing districts ends at 5 p.m. Monday.

The election is May 9.

Ramsey, 82 and a retired professor, said he sought re-election because of supporters who urged him to continue his service to the district. If re-elected, he said he plans to continue focusing on early childhood education and other issues.

Ramsey is seeking his sixth term.

English, 45, is the mother of three and a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty in Coppell.

She serves as the education improvement representative for the district’s PTA council and is a part of Guyer High School’s campus leadership team. She will contest Ramsey for the Place 1 seat to provide a voice for the Denton parents of district schoolchildren, she said. To her knowledge, she said, no one on the board has children who are currently attending Denton schools, and she wants to provide visible representation for those parents.

“From that standpoint, it would just bring a different perspective to the board,” she said.

Smith, 68, is seeking her second term on the board. No one has filed to challenge her.

With her background as a former Denton teacher, she said, she is aware of the needs of the district and hopes to continue the board’s effort to provide the best possible education and successes for its children.

“I felt like I just got started,” she said. “I want to see some of the goals the district has set complete.”

Some area city council races have begun heating up as well.

Hatice I. Salih, 51, who along with her husband owns Dan’s Meat and Produce, has joined a crowded race for Denton’s District 3, which is being vacated by Jack Thomson.

She said she is running because she is concerned about the state of the local economy.

“We should be really vigilant about keeping jobs, whether it is in the private sector or the public sector,” she said.

Also running in District 3, which covers northwest Denton, are: college student Andrew Teeter, 21; marketing specialist Jim Engelbrecht, 61; and computer analyst Amy Manuel, 44.

In Corinth, Mayor Vic Burgess will not seek a fourth term. Instead, two sitting council members, Paul Ruggiere and Shannon Bryan, have filed to replace him.

Olive Stephens, the mayor of Shady Shores since 1973, faces her first opposition since political newcomer Elizabeth Nugent challenged her bid for a 17th term in 2005. Council member Jerry Williams has filed for mayor of the town of 2,400.
